Elizabeth “Liz” Volk, age 62, passed away suddenly but peacefully on Friday, March 31, 2023 at the Wigmore Regional Hospital, Moose Jaw, SK. Elizabeth Myrtle Volk was born April 7, 1960 to Wesley & Flora Anderson in Winnipeg, MB. Liz grew up in Wetaskiwin, AB and during her high school years, gave her life to the Lord.
After high school, she went to Capernwray in England for one year then in 1980, she went to Millar College of the Bible in Pambrun, SK for three years. Liz’s desire was to be a missionary but unfortunately, every attempt was blocked because of health problems. She did a short-term mission in a village in Northern Alberta, another short-term in Ireland, a ten-week intensive Arabic training in Jordan (preparation for mission to the Muslims), and then a one-and-a-half-year term in Japan.
In between each attempt, Liz worked a variety of jobs as a desk clerk at a local hotel and a telephone operator in Wetaskiwin, but her favourite job was a church secretary at her home church.
Liz loved to take pictures and to read and write poetry — she also always wanted to be a writer. So in 1996, Liz went to Calgary, AB and enrolled in journalism and photography classes. But the summer before she left for school, her friends did a little match making with a man who lived in Winnipeg.
That’s when she first met Larry Volk, through letters on cassette and long talks on the telephone. Again, due to health, her schooling was cut short, which fast tracked her marriage. On March 1, 1997 Liz & Larry were married in Wetaskiwin and she moved to Winnipeg, where Larry was working at the Royal Bank as a computer programmer.
In 2001, they moved to Pambrun, where Larry attended Millar College. In 2012, they moved into Swift Current, SK. During these moves, Liz continued to write poetry and for the last few years, she wrote devotions for the church’s weekly Minute of Faith letter. Liz’s life touched many people and she made friends wherever she went. Her bright smile and generous heart will be missed by all who knew and loved her.
Liz is survived by her husband of 26 years, Larry Volk; her brother, John Anderson; her sisters-in-law, Patty (Ron) Meunier, Karen Wilkes, and Evelyn (Richard) Roy; her brother-in-law, Eugene (Krys) Volk; her numerous nieces and nephews; and by many extended family members and friends.
Liz was predeceased by her parents, Wesley & Flora Anderson; her parents-in-law, Fred & Julia Volk; and by her brothers-in-law, Arthur Volk and Patrick Wilkes.
The Funeral Service for Elizabeth “Liz” Volk was held on Wednesday, April 5, 2023 at 11:00 am from East Side Church of God, Swift Current, SK with Pastor Kevin Snyder and Phil Ruten officiating. “In the Garden” and “Just as I Am” were sung by the congregation under the leadership of Phil Olney, with Sandra Rempel serving as pianist. Special music was brought by Phil Olney, who sang “Oh, Glorious Love.” Tributes were given by Claudia Olney and John Anderson. The Scripture reading, II Corinthians 1:3-7, was given by Pastor Kevin Snyder. The message was given by Phil Ruten and was based on Philippians 3:10 and Zephaniah 3:17. The Interment Service was held following the Funeral Service from the Mount Pleasant Burial Park Columbarium, Swift Current, SK with Larry Volk serving as Urnbearer.
