Ellen Hodel Obituary

Ellen Margrethe Hodel, aged 84, passed away Tuesday October 16, 2018, just shy of her 85th birthday, at Cypress House, Swift Current, SK with her family by her side.  Ellen was born on October 23, 1933 to Henry & Grace Larsen in the Alida District, SK where she took her schooling. She was the oldest of three children, Roy and Erik.  She helped her parents on the farm as well as helped her uncle, Art Steffensen, on his farm.

In the early 1950’s the Larsen family moved to Moose Jaw, SK where Ellen met Ron Hodel, they were married in 1955. They made homes in Moose Jaw, Regina, and Southey, SK — having five children in the course of their marriage. In 1970, Ellen and the children moved to Regina. She completed her GED, worked as a key punch operator, and as a cook. She traveled to Denmark with her father and later again with her daughter. In the late 70’s,

Ellen moved to Herbert, SK with her two youngest children and worked locally. In 1980, she obtained employment with the Saskatchewan Wheat Pool as a cook, where she worked until retirement in 1994. This job enabled Ellen to see a great deal of Saskatchewan, a province she loved and lived in her whole life. Ellen retired to Swift Current and enjoyed all her many hobbies — crocheting needlework, bingo, gardening, bird watching, and doting on her pets. In later years, her memory started to fail and after a stay at the Swift Current Care Center, Ellen moved to Cypress House in December 2014.

Ellen is survived by her children, Marg (Roger) Dyck, Lorraine (Viktor) Alfoldy, Fred Hodel, Kelly Hodel, and Rosann Gallivan; her grandchildren, Miles (Susan) Dyck, Steffanie (Pete) Elliott, Jenn Stad, Chris (Katie) Stad, and Korey Hodel; her great-grandchildren, Darien Dyck, Mason Dyck, Carter Stad, Drillin Stad, Addy Elliot, and Kip Elliot; and by her numerous nieces, nephews, cousins, and in-laws. Ellen was predeceased by her parents, Henry & Grace Larsen; her brother, Roy Larsen; her sister-in-law, Margaret Larsen; her ex-husband, Ron Hodel; and by numerous aunts, uncles, cousins, and in-laws.

Ellen’s kindness, willingness to help others, and constant smile helped carry her through the tough times. She will be missed and always remembered. Ellen’s family would like to extend a special thank you to the staff of Cypress House for their years of care and service.

The Memorial Service for Ellen Hodel was held on Saturday, October 20, 2018 at 1:30 pm from Cypress House, Swift Current, SK with Dominick Martens officiating. “Amazing Grace” was sung by the congregation, led by Crystal Martens with Arlene Olson serving as pianist. The tribute was given by Lorraine Alfoldy, Ellen’s daughter. The eulogy was given by Miles Dyck, Ellen’s grandson. The Private Interment Service will be held at a later date from Mount Pleasant Burial Park Columbarium, Swift Current, SK with Roger Dyck and Vic Alfoldy, Ellen’s sons-in-law, serving as Urn Bearers. In memory of Ellen Hodel, donations made to Alzheimer’s Society of Saskatchewan (301 2550 12th Ave, Regina, SK, S4P 3X1) would be appreciated by the family.
