Elma Heffley

Elma Heffley, age 99, formerly of Rush Lake, SK, cherished mother Les (Shirley) Heffley and Gwen Loose, passed away peacefully to Heaven, the place that she longed for, on Saturday, March 21, 2020 at St. Joseph’s Hospice, Medicine Hat, AB.

Elma is survived by her children, Les (Shirley) Heffley and Gwen Loose; her four beloved grandchildren, Juanita (Hank) Aasman, Marlin (Angie) Heffley, Lorna (Darin) Hirning, and Darwin (Bonnie) Heffley; her eight great-grandchildren; her three step-great grandchildren; her five great-great-grandchildren; her sister-in-law, Irene; and by numerous nieces and nephews.

Elma outlived all of her family, including her one and only special son-in-law, Ken Loose.

Elma was born to Andrew & Amalie Steinley in Rush Lake — the second oldest of four children. She met her sweetheart, Henry Heffley, and they were married June 19, 1938. Elma was an incredibly hard worker on their Rush Lake farm, acting as a farm hand on top of her household duties. Later, she worked various jobs, including the Herbert Manor senior home, and tending to the grocery store that they owned (much to the enjoyment of her grandchildren). For many years at the Horseshoe Lodge in Swift Current, she was known for her countless pies and delicious cinnamon buns.

Elma’s church was her life, and she was involved in many activities — Bible studies, Sunday School, and everyone knew she was the boss of the church kitchen. Her home was always open for coffee and she hosted many missionaries and special speakers that came through the church. Elma moved to Medicine Hat in 2015, her iPad was her way of keeping in touch with everyone. We had a praying mother — she always told everyone that she was praying for us and God was always the centre of conversation. Elma was loving, giving, content, and at times, feisty.

A golden heart stopped beating, hard working hands were laid to rest.

The Private Interment Service for Elma Heffley was held Monday, March 30, 2020 from Memory Gardens Cemetery, Swift Current, SK. A Memorial Service will be held at a later date from Faith Evangelical Missionary Church, Swift Current.
