Elsie Schmidt, age 91, passed away peacefully on Friday, January 23, 2026 at Willow Creek Manor in Swift Current with family members at her side.
Elsie Schmidt (Weinbender) was born to Henry & Maria (Hoffman) Weinbender on April 4, 1934 along with her twin brother, Edward, on the family farm near Ernfold, SK. She grew up on the farm, attended Lavender School, and did babysitting for the children of her older siblings. Elsie married George Schmidt on April 23, 1954 and they began farming in the Flowing Well area. Elsie & George raised three boys, Lloyd, Ken, and Paul, and they also had two sons that died in infancy, Michael and Roger. In 1960 they moved to George’s father’s farm NW of Hodgeville.
Elsie and George divorced in 1978. Elsie remained on the farm until moving to Hodgeville in 1991 where she lived and worked as a caregiver to Hodgeville’s senior community. In 2015 she moved to the Prairie Pioneers Independent Housing complex in Swift Current. Elsie moved into Willow Creek Manor in Swift Current, in 2018 where she resided until her passing. Elsie was an avid gardener, and a devoted homemaker, mother and grandmother.
Elsie was predeceased by her two sons in infancy, Michael and Roger; her parents; her ten brothers, Jacob, Henry, Fred, Alex, David, Robert, Walter, Edward, and two in infancy; and by her sister, Minnie.
She is survived by her three sons and daughter-in-law, Lloyd, Ken, and Paul (Lori); seven grandchildren; nine great-grandchildren; two sisters-in-law; and numerous nieces and nephews.
A special thank you to all the staff of Willow Creek for their wonderful care of Elsie for the last eight years, and especially over the last few months and weeks of her life.
Lloyd, Ken, and Paul would also like to thank their Aunt Darlene (wife of Elsie’s twin brother Edward) for the incredible time and effort she spent helping Mom for many years. She is a very special person!
