Erna King Obituary

Erna Gail King, age 74, passed away peacefully in her sleep on Wednesday, March 4, 2026 at the Cypress Regional Hospital, Swift Current, Saskatchewan.

Erna was born on November 1, 1951 at Prelate, Saskatchewan to Warren and Alice Fyke. Raised in Sceptre, she moved to Saskatoon in Grade 10, where she attended Walter Murray Collegiate before furthering her education at the University of Saskatchewan. It was at university that she met the love of her life, Dennis King. The two were married on August 4, 1973, in Saskatoon.

Erna and Dennis shared over 50 years of marriage, building a life centered on family, community and hard work. Together, they built two family homes — one in Saskatoon and another on their acreage near Stewart Valley. Erna’s proudest accomplishments were her three children, Ryan Charles, Lonny Randall, and Jenna Rachul, and their families, whom she cherished deeply.

For more than 30 years, Erna worked at the Credit Union in Swift Current, serving at several locations throughout the community. She was detail-oriented, knowledgeable, and a trusted resource to many colleagues, playing an important role in credit union mergers, system changes, product development, and creating procedures and tools for staff. She loved organization and gadgets, always having the coolest stationery at work and the newest technology and kitchen tools at home, which she enjoyed sharing with others. A lifelong learner, she especially embraced technology and even taught herself Microsoft Office in the late 1990s, mastering shortcuts and passing her knowledge on to others.

Erna was a devoted volunteer who gave generously of her time to her community. While raising her family in Stewart Valley, she served on the local school board and volunteered at many school activities, including field trips, track and field days, and fundraising events such as fowl suppers. She also volunteered at the local skating rink, created booklets for the horticultural society’s events, and served as a 4-H group leader. At the local church, she helped lead the children’s Sunday School held in the church basement during Sunday services. After moving to Swift Current, Erna continued her volunteer work for many years with the Swift Current 57’s Baseball Club, assisting the board of directors as secretary, treasurer, and executive assistant. She also spent many seasons helping keep score at home games. The Swift Current 57’s noted that she always went above and beyond to ensure the success of the club. She also volunteered during the World Women’s Curling Championship held in Swift Current.

Erna cherished spending time with her family, especially her grandchildren, who held a special place in her heart. She enjoyed watching curling, Blue Jays baseball, home renovation shows and was an avid Taylor Swift fan. Erna loved crafting and scrapbooking, but her true passion was organization of her crafting supplies as well as every cupboard and drawer in her house. She had containers of every shape and size and didn’t just organize her home but enjoyed organizing for her family and friends. She treasured time spent visiting with her coffee friends from the credit union. She also deeply valued the many friendships she formed over the years.

Erna leaves to cherish  her memory her loving husband, Dennis; her children, Ryan (Karen) King – Waldheim, SK, Lonny (Kristin) King – Fort McMurray, AB, and Jenna (Kyle) Furseth – Swift Current, SK; her grandchildren, Alexia, Emily, Cody, Brodyn, Adelyn, Ella, Halle, and Grady; a brother, Clint (Doreen) Fyke; and various family and friends that were near and dear to her heart. She was predeceased by her father, mother, and brother, Allan.

The family would like to extend a special thank you to the staff, and in particular the nurses, at Cypress Regional Hospital for their warm and compassionate care during the many weeks she spent in the hospital. They would also like to thank her family and friends for their kindness, support, and care.

A gathering to celebrate Erna King’s life will be held at a later date.
