Gerald Salter, age 81 of Swift Current passed away on Saturday, October 8, 2022 at the Cypress Regional Hospital, Swift Current, SK. Gerald Leslie Salter was born June 21, 1941 to Leslie & Margaret Salter in Swift Current. The oldest of five children, he grew up living between the family farm at Webb, SK and their home in Swift Current.
Education was important to Gerald, after completing grade twelve at the Swift Current Collegiate Institute he furthered his education by obtaining his electrical engineering technologist diploma from SIAST in Moose Jaw, SK. He was also working towards his teaching certificate and was only a few credits shy when he determined that was not his calling and decided to put his engineering technologist diploma to work. He worked for several different companies including SaskTel, J.J. White & Associates, Cambrian Engineering, and Frontier Construction Ltd.
Gerald married Valerie Mitchell on September 28, 1968 in Saskatoon, SK where they were living at the time. It was there that their three children — Jill, Nicole, and Chad — were born. In May 1975, Gerald & Val decided to move back to Swift Current to raise their family. Gerald was the manager of Frontier Construction until 1978, when he had the opportunity to purchase shares in Frontier Construction. He worked there for 27 years until he was diagnosed with multiple myeloma in 2002, when he decided to retire.
He took great pride in his community and was actively involved in serving on many boards and committees. Gerald was one of the board members of the Swift Current Broncos involved in bringing the WHL team back to Swift Current in 1986. He also served on the Lac Pelletier Regional Park Board, Sask Abilities Council, Kinsmen Club, and St. Stephens Church Vestry to name a few.
Gerald & Val enjoyed traveling and went many places over the years with family and friends. Family was very important to Gerald — he always had time to lend a hand, bounce an idea off of, or host a family gathering. He had a good sense of humor and loved to tease, there was always a lot of laughs had.
Gerald was a very proud grandpa (gpa) to his five grandchildren, he could often be found at their sporting events, dance recitals, or whatever activity they were involved with at the time.
He enjoyed sports, reading, telling stories and reminiscing, drives in the country, puttering in the yard, and trying his hand at gardening. Gerald was a dedicated, kind, and caring husband, father, and gpa who will be dearly missed.
Gerald is survived by his wife of 54 years, Valerie Salter; his children, Nicole (Kent) Mickleborough and Chad (Lisa) Salter; his grandchildren, Brittany (Tyler Crawford) and Emily Mickleborough, and Mia, Jaxon, and Lexi Salter; his sister, Sharon (Blaine) Castle; his brothers, Terry (Connie) Salter and Ron (Cheryl) Salter; and by numerous nieces and nephews.
