With sadness we announce that Geza Charley Pagonyi passed away peacefully at Prairie Health Care Centre in Cabri, SK, in the morning of August 5, 2024, aged 94 years,
Geza was born in Budapest, Hungary on June 2, 1930. He grew up amidst the struggles of World War II and was eventually conscripted into the Hungarian Military. In the mid 1950’s, Geza left Hungary and immigrated to Canada. He spent many years working in Eastern Canada in the mining industry and many more years on the West Coast working in the forest industry. He became a Canadian Citizen in 1963, which he was very proud of. He served in a private security service in the Vancouver area until he found his way to Cabri in 1993. It was in Cabri that Geza would live out the rest of his life. Geza became friends with many residents of Cabri, and valued the connection to the community. He was a faithful member of St. Joseph’s Roman Catholic Parish. Everyone enjoyed his easy way of welcoming all who attended. His faith never left him, and he relied on God and his St. Joseph family to him through various health challenges over the next 30 years.
Geza was a lover of history, and he knew much about the development of Europe and his homeland, informing any who would listen about the ways culture and politics shaped that part of the world. He was always very proud of his Hungarian roots. He liked to garden and has much insight into how to grow things. Geza was a collector, and he accumulated a treasure of things old and new, many of which would not have seemed valuable to others. He had an extensive collection of books, involving History, Gardening, and Science. He never stopped learning.
Eventually, caring for himself at home became difficult, and Geza moved into the PHCC where he spent the last few years of his life. His friends in the community wish to thank the entire care staff at PHCC who made Geza’s last years safe, happy, and dignified.
A Memorial Mass will be held in Geza’s honor at St. Joseph’s Roman Catholic Church in Cabri, with date as yet to be determined. May Geza have Eternal Rest in Peace.
