Gilbert Reimer, age 73, slipped away peacefully in his sleep Saturday morning, October 31, 2020, at his Swift Current residence. Gilbert was born August 10, 1947, in Rosetown, Saskatchewan, the youngest of three boys born to Henry and Virginia Reimer. About a year later, the family moved to Clearbrook, BC, where a truck accident on December 20, 1948, claimed the life of his grandfather Peter Unger, and his dad Henry Reimer.
In March of 1953, his mom Virginia married his stepfather Henry B. Dyck. Together with the boys: Richard, Erwin, and Gilbert, they moved to Henry’s farm in Dunelm, south of Swift Current. It was here where they joined Henry’s five older children: Ernest, Anne, Henry, Gertrude, and Helena.
Gilbert spent his youth helping with the family business (Harmony Service Station and Store), driving the tractor on their farm, and chasing cattle. He often bragged about how fast he could run those cows and jump the fences. Due to his farm responsibilities, he did not finish high school; however, he did attend Bible School in Three Hills, Alberta.
After purchasing a brand-new truck in 1975, Gilbert and his life-long friend John Kehler took a month-long, 10,000-mile trip touring the United States. Over the years many recollections were shared about that trip and the places they visited; one favourite place was Carlsbad Caverns.
At the end of March 1976, he met Sarah Hiebert; they were married September 18, 1976. They had three children, Merlin, Marlene, and Marten —born in quick succession.
A temporary job as a carpet installer turned into a life-long career which he performed until the day he passed. He had a passion for playing the saw and joined the gospel music group, Notes of Praise, where over the years they played for many people. He also loved playing the guitar, writing poems and biblical papers, and studying the bible.
Gilbert was rich in friends and enjoyed visiting and going for coffee. His children and grandchildren were most important to him; he attended their activities and events as often as he could.
Gilbert is predeceased by his stepsiblings: Gertrude Dyck and Ernest Dyck, and is survived by his brothers: Richard (Sandy) Reimer, Erwin (Lisa) Reimer; his children: Merlin (Sara) Reimer, Marlene (Clint) Funk, Marten Reimer; his six grandchildren; and numerous nieces and nephews.
The Funeral Service for Gilbert Reimer was held on Friday, November 13, 2020 at 2:00 pm from Bridgeway Community Church, Swift Current, SK with John Kehler officiating. “Praise Be the Lord, the Almighty” and “When We See Christ” were sung by the congregation under the leadership of Dave Fehr, with Sandra Rempel serving as pianist. Special music was brought by Merlin Reimer, who sang “Jesus Savior Pilot Me,” Notes of Praise, who sang “Sweet is the Promise” and “Gott Wird Dich Tragen,” and Helena Leiding, who sang “Ich Bete an Die Macht Der Liebe.” Tributes were given by Marlene Funk, Carson and Austyn Funk, and Marten Reimer. The Life History and Obituary was given by Merlin Reimer.
The Interment Service was held following the Funeral Service from the Wymark Cemetery, Wymark, SK with Richard Reimer, Erwin Reimer, Merlin Reimer, Marten Reimer, Clint Funk, and Carson Funk serving as Pallbearers.
