It is with great sadness that the family announces the passing of Glenn Stewart, age 78, on Tuesday, June 14, 2024 at the Cypress Regional Hospital, Swift Current, SK with family by his side.
Glenn Robert Stewart was born on December 17, 1945 at Swift Current, SK to Bob & Ethel Stewart, the middle child of 5. Glenn grew up at Stewart Valley, SK and together with his two older siblings would ride horses to and from Stewart Valley School. As a child and teenager, Glenn loved his horses, and they responded so well to him. He would ride horses to feed cattle in the winter, compete in the Swift Current Exhibition, and enjoy Sunday afternoon rides along the Swift Current Creek. Glenn’s horses loved him back, coming from the end of the pasture with anticipation, as well as working hard for competitions. When Glenn’s last horse, Rocket, had to be put down, Glenn was heartbroken, and his desire for another horse wasn’t happening. After Glenn left school, he worked at various jobs as well as on the farm. His dad had a stroke when he was just 40, so everyone stepped up to keep the farm thriving. Glenn would often work away from home and return to help as needed. His first job away from the farm was helping build the spillway at the South Saskatchewan River Dam at Outlook, SK. After just two weeks, his abilities and desire for a job well done showed, and he was made lead hand. Glenn worked at various jobs, for a year he helped install water and sewer in Stewart Valley, and often in winter he would work away on drilling, and servicing oil rigs. Glenn married the love of his life, Linda Garland, on June 6, 1970, and they were blessed with two children, Shayne and Kristi. They lived on the Stewart family farm for 35 years before moving into Swift Current. Glenn & Linda were kept busy following their children to various activities: hockey, dance, volleyball, figure skating, and even coaching softball. In later years, Glenn continued supporting sports and other activities through his grandchildren: hockey, soccer, wrestling, singing, and dance. Glenn loved fixing things for the farm, the house, or the yard. He helped neighbours with building, fixing and repairing their equipment if he could, and later was part-owner of Stewart Valley Enterprise in Stewart Valley. Glenn loved the challenge to fix anything, as long as it didn’t include any bookwork. He also enjoyed improving the farm equipment, like attaching an auger to their first air seeder, various welding projects like bale speers, pea sheller for Linda, utility trailers, or whatever was needed to keep the farm viable and improve the ease and durability of his equipment and his life. Glenn was one of the first in the area to chem fallow, own an air seeder, seed pulse crops, and continuous cropping. He always took pride and interest in new plans for agriculture. Glenn retired from farming in 2014 but continued to help Shayne at the farm for several more years. Glenn spent close to 60 years of day-to-day farming and loved it all. As their children moved away for post secondary education, Glenn & Linda began travelling to Arizona spending almost 30 winters there. While in Arizona, Glenn was introduced to his next hobby, woodworking. This hobby included making grandfather clocks, dining room tables, headboards, computer desks, wall clocks, a bedroom suite for themselves, bowls galore, cutting boards, coffee and end tables, front door benches, baby cradle, and many other items for family and friends. Glenn built a wood shop in their basement in town which was so handy with lots of room for projects to keep him busy. He became quite the mentor at the wood shop in Silveridge, AZ and loved chatting with fellow woodworkers and finding new projects, or tools to try. Glenn & Linda enjoyed traveling, with trips to Ontario, World Expo in Vancouver, family vacations to Hawaii, including a special trip with Glenn’s Mom and all the Stewart family, and two trips to Disneyland. Glenn & Linda also enjoyed many years camping with family at Cypress and at the Landing and traveling with their 5th wheel to the East coast and to Alaska. To celebrate their 50th Anniversary they took their family on a special Caribbean cruise. The last few years, Glenn’s health started to decline, making it difficult to travel very far. That was when Glenn reignited his love for fishing that he’d shared with his mother and his brother, Boyd, so many years before. Glenn bought a fishing boat and would often take other family members fishing with him and this gave him great pleasure. Glenn even convinced Shayne and Logan to get the boat ready for this fishing season.Glenn leaves to cherish his memory his wife, Linda, of almost 54 years; his son, Shayne & Kristie Stewart – their children, Logan and Lauren, of Stewart Valley; his daughter, Kristi & Marc Schwartz – their children, Brinkley, Payten (Averie), and Carly, of Swift Current; his sisters, Jean Wenzel and Brenda & Don Kerslake; his in-laws, Peggy & Billy Stirton; and by numerous nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by his parents, Bob & Ethel Stewart; his brothers, Bruce Stewart and Boyd Stewart; his parents-in-law, Edgar & Elsie Garland; and by his brother-in-law, Don Wenzel.
