Gordon “Gord” Ens, age 75, passed away peacefully on Thursday, January 13, 2022 at the Meadows, Swift Current, SK.
Gordon Neil Ens was born April 27, 1946 — the second of four children and only son of Cornelius & Helen Ens.
From an early age, it was apparent that Gord had a genuine love for animals. He was only about a year and a half old when he developed a relationship with his first pet — a chicken. He carried that chicken everywhere he went, provided Mom would let him. From then on, it was dogs, cats, pigs, a colt (that followed him everywhere), rabbits, and pigeons.
Once he got his driver’s license, Gord’s interest turned to cars. He dropped out of school, got a job at the Healy Hotel as a bellhop, and bought a car — the first of many. He was plagued with frequent bouts of “car fever,” always trading up to something newer and better. Those were the days of cruising the streets with friends almost every night, eventually ending up at A&W.
Gordon also had a natural talent for music. Dad taught him how to play acoustic guitar and from there it progressed to electric guitar, which he really enjoyed. He also tried his hand at banjo, mandolin, and accordion. He accomplished all of this without any formal music lessons.
In 1975, he landed a job with the RM of Swift Current as a grader operator. It was his dream job — he took great pride in building and maintaining roads for the next 33 years. Even after his retirement, Gord liked to spend his summer afternoons driving around the country, checking on “his roads.” Of course, they were never quite up to his standards.
In the fall of 2020, Gordon was diagnosed with terminal cancer. He was admitted into palliative care at the Meadows on January 27, 2021, where he received excellent care until his passing.
Gordon was predeceased by his father, Cornelius, in 1989, and his mother, Helen, in 2016.
Gordon is survived by his sisters, Betty Fehr, Sally Coward, and Sheila (Jake) Martens; and by numerous nieces and nephews.
He has gone on ahead, but we’ll see him again in glory. We love you, Gord.
