Obituary

Gordon Olson, age 87, of Swift Current SK and formerly of Simmie, SK passed away peacefully in his sleep on Wednesday, July 12, 2023 at the Cypress Regional Hospital, Swift Current, SK.

Gordon Grant Olson was born on June 4, 1936 to Gustaf Adolf Olson and Phemie “Effie” Grant at the Swift Current Union Hospital. Gordon grew up on the family farm just outside of Simmie, where many of his most dear memories were made. He got to both Cedar and Thring schools by riding his wild colt and achieved a Grade Nine Education. He treasured the work and lifestyle that came with farm life, he took over the family farm when he was 16. From 1965 to 1976, he shared the workload with his friend, Benny Anning.

On April 8, 1960 Gordon married Shirley Anne Lofthang. Gordon & Shirley raised their four children in the same farm-based lifestyle that Gordon treasured, living in the two-room farmhouse Gordon was raised in and eventually, a house that was moved onto another part of the homestead. While always busy on the farm, Gordon made time to be involved in a number of community organizations including the Sask Wheat Pool, Simmie Athletic Association, Simmie Minor Hockey, Cedar View Snowplow Club, Simmie and Shaunavon Co-op Boards, the Farmers Union, and the Simmie School Board, where he served a variety of positions and was always valued for his expertise and for a good laugh. Gordon was a busy man, but he always made time for his family, a good game of pool, and adventures with his best friend for many years, Gordon Modien.

In 1996, Gordon & Shirley moved to Swift Current, where they managed an apartment building before moving into a home with a larger garden. Gordon enjoyed cultivating a close group of friends who enjoyed bowling, coffee time, and weekly suppers together — the group remains close to this day. He was always present at his children's and grandchildren’s milestone moments, as well as regular ball games, rodeos, and community events.

Gordon will be fondly remembered for his sense of humour and his love of candy, camping, gardening, and cribbage. Gordon had a keen memory for the birthdays and anniversaries of anyone he met, including his cows. Gordon could look at a photo of his herd and tell you every cow’s life story, even years after “retiring.” Gordon was the heart and centre of his family and will be dearly missed.

Gordon was predeceased by his loving wife of 58 years, Shirley (Lofthang) Olson; parents, Gustaf Olson and Phemie “Effie” (Grant) (Olson) Sandberg; stepfather, Karl Sandberg; siblings, Elisabeth (Betty) Geibel and Adolf Olson; great-granddaughter, Lily Olson; and by numerous brothers-in-law, sisters-in-law, aunts, uncles, and cousins.

Gordon is survived by his four children, nine grandchildren, and three great-grandchildren; his son, Brady (Donna) Olson, and their children, Calsey, Garrett, and Jessie; his daughter, Tammy Olson, and her daughter, Jayden (Michael) Heffner (Tatum, Layne, and Jack); her daughter, Debra (Bernard) Chabot, and their daughters, Kelsey (Darnell Stewart), Brooke, and Lindsey; his son, Greg Olson, and his children, Tristan and Mackenzie; as well as many cousins, nieces, nephews, and friends.

At Gordon’s request, a funeral service will not be held.
