Harvey Erhard Engel was born on October 19, 1948 to Jacob & Olga Engel. His young life was a happy one, spent largely with his favorite playmate and younger brother, Albert. His education started at the one-room school in Bigford, followed by high school in Wymark. As he got older, Harv kept busy outside of school helping on the farm but always made time for softball on Sundays. At one of these softball games, he was introduced to the future love of his life, Marion Fehr. In 1966, he attended university in Regina, earning his teaching certificate, later returning to complete a Bachelor of Education with Great Distinction. In 1971, Harv moved to Prelate and taught there until 1976. During this time, he put some impressive mileage on his Gran Torino making weekly trips to Wymark to visit Marion.
On March 30, 1974, Harvey and Marion were married, which he described as “the best thing I ever did”. Their first three kids, Kerrie, Amy, and Craig, were born in quick succession, and then seven years later, their youngest daughter, Shayna, joined the crew. Life at home revolved around farming and school, but they had many adventures together, including building their dream home, skiing, camping, and a family trip to Europe.
In 1976, he was recruited to move to Cabri School, where he continued to teach high school math and physical education. Harv had the privilege of teaching all four of his children in the classroom, and often said, “I loved my teaching career”.
Although Harvey always helped on the family farm, he began farming in his own right following the purchase of land in 1979. After he retired from teaching in 1999, at the age of 50, he expanded the farm. Harv and Marion moved to an acreage near Wymark in 2005. Harv absolutely loved having his kids farm with him, and anyone he talked to heard about it.
Family connections were important to Harv. He was thrilled with frequent texts, calls, and visits with many nieces, nephews, and great-nieces and nephews. In 2003, this desire to stay connected led to him and Marion hosting an annual Engel family reunion on their acreage that continues to this day.
Harvey battled hard for his family but was never afraid of dying. He had a strong faith that the same God and Saviour who had carried him throughout his life would also carry him into the arms of Jesus. He told many people “If you become a follower of Jesus, the greatest adventure is still to come.” As the sun rose on October 2, 2025, surrounded by his family and with the love of his life by his side, Harv’s greatest adventure began.
Harvey is survived by his wife, Marion; his four children, Kerrie (Soraya) Engel, Amy (Cam) Epp, Craig (Sherry) Engel, and Shayna Engel; his five grandchildren, John, Micah, David, Isaac, and Judith; and his brothers, Victor (Alma) and Albert (Laura). Harvey was predeceased by his parents, Jacob & Olga Engel; his siblings, Harry Arthur (infancy), Hilda, and Bob.
A common refrain for Harv was: “Good grief, I have had an incredible life. I have never had to go to war, and my kids have never had to go to war. I have never gone hungry. I always felt loved. I can hardly believe what God has allowed me to do.”
