Jacob "Jake" Dyck Obituary

Jacob J. Dyck, age 92, passed away on Sunday, October 27, 2024, surrounded by his family at The Meadows, Swift Current, SK. Jacob J. “Jake” Dyck was born in the Hamlet of Chortitz, near Wymark, SK on June 5th, 1932 to Jacob M. & Aganetha (Peters) Dyck. He was the oldest of four boys and from an early age, he was his dad’s right-hand man working on the farm. As a young teenager, Jake taught himself to play guitar. Music and singing soon grew to be a lifelong passion. He used his musical talents at church, special occasions when celebrating family and friends, various senior facilities, and, of course, around home to entertain visitors, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren alike. On August 3rd, 1952, Jake married Margaret Heinrichs, the love of his life and wife of nearly seventy-two years.

They welcomed a son, Randall, in 1954, a daughter, Glennis, in 1957, and a son, Garnet, in 1959. In 1957, Jake & Margaret moved to Thunder Creek where Jake worked as a grain buyer for the next sixteen years. They were very active in the Pine Lake community, making many fond memories and lifelong friendships. Jake enjoyed pitching for the local fastball team, playing hockey, and volunteering. In 1973, Jake transferred to the elevator in Rush Lake, SK where they all continued to be active with curling and fastball. By the fall of 1975, Jake and Margaret had moved to Swift Current, SK, where he was a manager at Woolworths. In 1991, Jake began one of his most enjoyed careers, working for Saskatchewan Crop Insurance. The role of a crop insurance adjuster suited him well as it put his natural sense of humor and gift of the gab to good use. Jake officially retired in 1996 but continued to stay active, by always having a project or two on the go in his garage, around home or helping others. At the age of 80, he began to restore and complete a 1946 Fargo that shows his amazing craftsmanship and skill. Jake enjoyed fishing, camping, and ending a good day on the water with a big campfire and delicious fish fry.

Reflecting on his life, Jake said his greatest blessings were “to have married a wonderful, kind, and loving woman, and to raise three wonderful children whom he dearly loves”. Jake’s legacy of kindness and honesty will continue on through his family, his son, Randy & Laurel Dyck, his daughter, Glennis & Loel Steinley, and his son, Garnet & Lorie Dyck; his grandchildren and great-grandchildren, Jennifer Juuti, children – Margo and Jake: Curtis & Chalci, children – Daemon and Millie: Travis & Stephanie Steinley, children – Brianna and Liam, stepchildren – Summer and Grayson St Cyr: Justin & Jamie Steinley: Natasha & Derek Martens, children – June, Susie, Charlie, Helen and Sarah: and Shantel & Sean Howell, – child, baby Ray; his brothers, Frank Dyck, John & Verna Dyck; a sister-in-law, Elaine Dyck; and brothers-in-law, Don Loeppky, and Howard Hesjedal and his many friends.

Jake was predeceased by his wife, Margaret, April 8, 2024; great-granddaughter, Charlotte Dyck; his parents, Jacob M. & Agnetha Dyck, a brother, Martin Dyck; his parents-in-law, Jacob & Katherine Heinrichs; his in-law and their spouses, Stella Dyck, Katherine & John Wall, Peter & Margaret Heinrichs, Helen & Isaac Wall, William & Eleanor Heinrichs, Anne & Charles Straub, Agnes & Austen Robson, Hilda & William Robson, Mary & Norman Allan, Jake & Dorothy Heinrichs, Evelyn Hesjedal, and Betty Loeppky; several nieces and nephews; and by many good friends.
