John Wiebe Obituary

Johnnie Wiebe, age 84, beloved husband, father, grandfather, great‑grandfather, friend and Boss passed away on Saturday, March 28, 2026 at The Meadows – Clover House in Swift Current, SK. Johnnie Alvin Wiebe was born on March 20, 1942, to Ben & Mary Wiebe in the Wymark district. Johnnie was the oldest of five children and he spent his childhood growing up in the Wymark area. Johnnie started out attending school in a one‑room schoolhouse, completing his education through Grade 10.

Later in life, he showed great determination and pride in learning by earning his GED as an adult. His first job was pumping gas at Rathwell Esso Service Station. From there, John worked hauling gravel for his father, Ben. He later drove a delivery truck for Pepsi for a short time before attending auction school in Mason City, Iowa. John also worked briefly for the City of Swift Current as a street sweeper. John’s career then led him to the Pool Stockyards, where he worked as a livestock auctioneer and cattle buyer. During this time, he also completed training through Western Breeders to become an artificial insemination technician. John frequently “moonlighted” as a cattle AI technician and also took great pride in teaching others the skills of artificial insemination.

Fastball was a lifelong passion for John. He played the sport for over 40 years, dedicating himself to the demanding role of pitcher. Through hard work and commitment, he developed his skills and played on several teams, including the Wymark Tigers, completing his ball career coaching the Can/Am Eagles, forming friendships and memories that lasted a lifetime.

In the fall of 1965, John met Muriel, and they were married on May 14, 1966. They made their home in Swift Current before moving to their acreage, where they remained for 50 years. Together, John and Muriel embraced and enjoyed every aspect—and challenge—of the country lifestyle. They were blessed with three children: Darrell (born 1969), Lori (born 1970), and Barry (born 1972).

As a family, they worked and played together, enjoying ski trips, summer boating, and time spent with friends and loved ones. John’s grandchildren were incredibly important to him. As “Grandpa,” he encouraged them in education, thoughtful decision‑making, and pursuing their careers. He was generous in helping them reach their goals and loved hearing about all they were doing.

In 1976, John gave his life to the Lord. John and Muriel faithfully attended Open Bible Church, which remained their home church to this day. John had many interests and great joys in life, some of which included watching his grandchildren play sports, cheering for the Toronto Blue Jays, boating and fishing, sitting around the fire pit for hot‑dog roasts, listening to gospel messages and music, and last but not least – enjoying classic cars, local car shows, and “Taillight Tuesdays” with the Rogue Cruisers, which was a weekly highlight.

John is survived by his loving wife, Muriel Wiebe; his children, Darrell (Aline), Lori (Mike), and Barry (Dawnell); his grandchildren, Wyatt and Austin (Darrell & Aline): Ranessa, Abigail, Esther, and Dylan (Lori & Mike): Morgan and Emmit (Barry & Dawnell); his great‑grandchild, Elsa; his brother, Norm (Carol); and by many nieces and nephews. John was predeceased by his parents, Ben & Mary Wiebe; his brother, Elmer; his sisters, Irene and Rhona; his parents‑in‑law, George & Hazel Haggart; and by his nephews Clinton Ens and Brent Wiebe. The family would like to extend their sincere gratitude to the Cypress Regional Hospital staff and the staff at Clover House for the dedication and care shown to our husband and father in his final weeks. The Palliative Care Team provided compassionate support and guidance throughout John’s final days. Thank you also to Swift Current Funeral Home for their professional guidance and loving care as we lay John to rest.
