Karen Gail Hildebrandt was born on August 24th, 1966 in Swift Current, SK to Peter & Anne Hildebrandt. She grew up on the family farm in Blumenhof, SK along with two older siblings, Charlene and Wayne, and two younger siblings, Lori and Terilynn. They were neighbours to her Grandparents, Isaac & Mary Hildebrandt, and to two Uncles, Henry and Jake. Karen was brought up in a Christian family, attending Sunday School and church at the Blumenhof Gospel Church. She enjoyed riding her minibike with her childhood friend, Carolyn, playing baseball with her family, and skating in winter. There were also frequent camping trips with her family to Sleeping Buffalo, Montana, and the Alberta Rockies.
Karen acquired her driver’s licence and was gifted a 1975 Monte Carlo from her parents. With her own transportation, Karen enjoyed cruising around with her friend, Leean, to Swift Current, which also allowed her to get a job at Dairy King. While working at that job, she would eventually meet a young man from Herbert, Desmond Wiens. As time went on, they started dating and a year later they were engaged. After marriage, they went on a honeymoon to California in their 1970 Mustang. They settled in Herbert, where her in-laws, Victor & Dorothy Wiens, lived. In Herbert she started waitressing at the family restaurant. Karen & Desmond were blessed with two children, Riley and Brittany. She eventually started babysitting in their family home which also allowed her to raise her own children, which fulfilled her lifelong dream.
Guided by her Christian faith, Karen attended the Herbert Crossroads Church. She had a deep love for her family and enjoyed hosting dinners and meeting up with relatives in Swift Current and Blumenhof. Christmas was certainly her favorite time of the year. Karen also had a passion for gardening, which she learned from Victor. She enjoyed doing home renovations as well. Karen took great care of animals and could often be seen walking their dog around Herbert. Karen had many friends whom she loved to spend time with, and they served as a great support network and encouragement to help get her through the struggles that she faced.
In the mid 90’s, Karen was diagnosed with Lupus. As the years went on, the disease gave her many day-to-day health challenges. Through it all, Karen showed great determination and perseverance to overcome her Lupus while maintaining a great attitude, even while feeling unwell. Recently she got the flu and later a cold, which combined with the Lupus she eventually required her to be hospitalised. Karen’s sickness progressed and she was transferred to the Regina General Hospital where she suddenly passed away at the age of 59, on Sunday, October 12th, 2025 at 8:01 p.m. with her family by her side and the comfort of her Lord and Saviour Jesus Christ.
Karen leaves to cherish her memory her husband, Des Wiens; her children, Riley Wiens and Brittany Wiens; her siblings, Charlene McAuley, Wayne (Patti) Hildebrandt, Lori (Frank) Ward, and Terilynn (Ian) Schofield; and her nieces and nephews. She was pre-deceased by her parents, Peter & Anne Hildebrandt; her in-laws, Victor & Dorothy Wiens; and by a brother-in-law, George McAuley. Karen will be dearly missed by all those who knew and loved her and called her friend.
