Ken Nelson, age 84, passed away on Sunday, July 6, 2025 at the Herbert & District Integrated Healthcare Facility, Herbert, SK.
Kenneth “Ken” George Nelson was born on August 25, 1940 at Herbert, SK to Anna & Axel Nelson, joining his sister, Esther, and his two brothers, Donald and Edward. His primary home was the family farm located 13 miles north of Herbert.
Ken attended the local country school, Lundeen School, until it closed. He then went to Herbert School and lived in town. His brothers complained that their mom always baked and sent most of it with Ken. Later Ken went to boarding school in Outlook at L.C.B.I. There he was known as ‘Dynamite’ because of his size and how much mischief he could make. He graduated from Grade 12 in 1958. Ken made many friends, some who were lifelong friends. After graduation Ken worked on construction tunneling for the Gardiner Dam. It wasn’t long until he decided to go back farming with his father, Axel, and his brother, Donald. Ken spent the rest of his working years on Nelson Acres enjoying farming, grain farming, and raising cattle. Ken also liked building. Farming wasn’t the only thing he enjoyed, travelling was also a pleasure. He travelled to Mexico and made many good friends there. He also went to Sweden and Norway to visit family. His hobbies were stamp and coin collecting and collecting old tractors and signs.
Ken liked participating in community activities. He was councilor for Division 6 for the RM of Morse for 10 years and Reeve for 13 years. He was active in the Herbert Lions Club for many years. Liberal politics was high on his list. Ken was very active in the Lutheran Church, and with the church council. The safety council was another of his activities.
Ken was quite happy to tell people that he was 75 and hadn’t been in the hospital since his birth. When he was 80, he still operated the air seeder. However, that was about to change. One night in October 2021, he had a stroke, left the farm never to return to work. Ken very much appreciated the good care the nurses gave him for his remaining years.
Ken is survived by his sister, Esther; his sister-in-law, Sharon; his nephew, Shayne (Veronica) – daughter, Abi; his nephew, Jim Bob – children, Carla, Ta`vas, Sapphire, Ari, and Kai; his nephew, Donnie; his grandnieces, Jaden (Jeremy) – children, Zaida, Zack, Zaylee, Zeke; Sage (Sonny) – children, Asanee, Sierra, Romeo, Bravery, and Echo; Talon – children, Ava and Ashton. He was predeceased by his parents, Anna & Axel; his brothers, Edward (Joan) and Donald; his niece, Juanita; his grandma, Margit Gullstein; and by his uncles Olaf, Oliver, and Edwin.
