Leslie Larter, age 92, passed away peacefully on Friday, July 8, 2022 at the Herbert and District Integrated Healthcare Facility, Herbert, SK.
Leslie Harold Larter was born February 13, 1930 to Ross & Laura Larter in Broadview, SK where he grew up with his three brothers — Bill, Don, and Wayne. After completing grade eleven he joined the workforce, his job with the Broadview Coop as a fuel truck driver in August 1956 began a 38 year career with the Coop. From 1960 – 1994 Leslie worked around Saskatchewan in Francis, Beaubier, Grenfell, Canora, Arcola, and Bracken in various positions — truck driver manager, manager, department manager of the bulk and service station, department manager for the bulk and fertilizer department, and as a branch manager before he retired.
Leslie met the love of his life, Mary Copeland, and they were married on October 8, 1966. Together, Leslie & Mary raised two sons — Dale and Dwight. He took trips with his family and later in life, just he and Mary. They enjoyed bus trips to BC and the Maritimes, Nashville, Disneyland, took a Caribbean cruise, Branson, and Minot. He also enjoyed attending the Gospel Jamboree’s in the Frenchman River Valley and Warman, and listening to gospel music in Swift Current whenever he could — his favorite hymn was “Just As I Am.”
Leslie loved baseball from childhood and played until he was 53 as an orthodox pitcher. He also loved curling and playing pool. Leslie was a member of St. Paul’s Lutheran Church in Herbert.
He was also very active with the Lion’s Club and a well-known member, starting with the Lion’s Club in Bracken where he found tremendous joy volunteering with various projects. When Leslie & Mary moved to Herbert, he transferred his membership and continued his participation without missing a beat. He was also a member of the Masonic Lodge in Climax until 2001, when they merged with the Swift Current Lodge.
His favourite flowers were petunias and roses. He loved to go fishing, camping, and play horseshoes. Leslie would have liked to receive further education and take up a trade, he will be remembered as a hard worker who committed himself wholeheartedly to whatever he set his mind and hand to.
Leslie will be dearly missed by his sons, Dale Larter and Dwight Larter; his brothers, Bill (Shirley) Larter (Broadview, SK), Don (Maryanne) Larter (Regina, SK), and Wayne Larter (Windermere, BC); and by his nieces and nephews.
Leslie was predeceased by his wife, Mary Larter (2017); parents, Ross (1975) & Laura (2007) Larter; and by his sister-in-law, Greta Larter (2016).
