Leslie Shewan

It is with sadness that we announce the peaceful passing of Leslie G. Shewan, age 101, on Friday, April 2, 2021 at the Age Care Glenmore Long-term Care Centre, Calgary, AB.

Leslie Goodwin Shewan was born February 8, 1920 near Palmerston, ON to John & Sarah (Goodwin) Shewan — the third youngest of seven children. He worked at Watt’s Feed Mill, Bramhill’s Feed Mill, and CNR Shops before moving to Saskatchewan in 1946, where he purchased the Roy Stinson farm near McCord. Leslie married Lauretta Munford on June 17, 1947 in Meyronne, SK and lived on the farmyard of Elmer & June Munford, where they farmed together for 30 years.

In the fall of 1981, they retired and moved into Swift Current, SK where Leslie enjoyed his vegetable garden, raspberries, and especially his red geraniums. He was a volunteer driver for Home Care, repaired many things, visited and played cards with friends, golfed, and participated in Bible study and other activities at Trailview Alliance Church.

Leslie enjoyed his family time, especially with his granddaughters and great-grandsons. He moved to a seniors residence in Calgary in 2013 to be closer to family. He loved participating in their activities, and prided himself in looking after some of the outside flowers. Leslie fell in February 2020 and required more care, with the pandemic cut-backs he stayed with Calvin & Donna until October. Then, he moved into an extended care facility, where he lived until his passing. Leslie will be dearly missed by all who knew him.

Leslie was predeceased by his wife, Lauretta, in 2004; his brothers, Ormund, Lorne, Spencer, and Gerald; and by his sister, Pauline.

Leslie is survived by sons, Brian (Lois) and Calvin (Donna); his granddaughters, Melissa, Jennifer (Gaurav), and Monica (Phillip); his great-grandsons, Bodhi and Koa; his sister, Marjorie Dechert; his good friend, Peggy Eccleston; and by numerous nieces and nephews. 

The Private Family Graveside Service for Leslie Shewan was held on Saturday, April 17, 2021 at 1:00 pm from the McCord Cemetery, McCord, SK with Rev. Unkyu Ji officiating. Gary Munford, Keith Munford, Steve Dawson, Doug Hannon, Dale Thomson, and Ron Kelly served as Pallbearers. “Lily of the Valley” and “The Beautiful Garden of Prayer” were played for those in attendance. The Eulogy was read by Leslie’s son, Brian.  Tributes were given by Leslie’s granddaughters, Monica, Jennifer, and Melissa.
