Lucille Herbel

Mom was born February 2, 1934, to Henry Sr. & Molly Hinther. She was the last of the 5 children born to grandpa & grandma Hinther. Mom was born on the family farm in the Flowing Well District. Mom always told us that it was so cold when she was born that she had to be kept in front of the stove to keep warm. Growing up mom told us that she got spoiled by her siblings as there was quite an age difference between the oldest son, Henry born in 1918, Dick in 1920, Gordon in 1923, her sister, Violet in 1927, and then mom in 1934. She used to tell us that if she whined, she’d get her way.

Mom went to Henke Rural School while living on the farm and then in the fall of 1945 her family moved to Swift Current where mom finished her education to grade 10.

As a teenager, mom accepted Christ into her heart. Faith was very important to her, and she shared her faith with others. She loved the Lord!

Mom and Dad got married on April 12, 1952. The day of the wedding was marked by a flood and mom worried that dad wouldn’t be able to make it over Elmwood bridge to get to First United Church for the wedding. He made it, and they started their married life out on the farm in the Beaver Flats District. Together they worked the farm. Mom raised chickens and learned to butcher them. Mom remembered her first experience with trying to chop off the head of the chicken, it didn’t go so well. She only got the chicken’s head half chopped off before it took off on her and she had quite the time to get it back, after that dad had to do it before he left for the field. Mom always grew a large garden, milked cows and hauled water from the pump house to the house. She worked hard and was always there to help dad in any way that he may have needed help.

Mom and dad were married for 10 years and then adopted their 1st daughter, Orabeth, and then 3 years later adopted their 2nd daughter, me, Eldamae. Mom always told us how excited her and dad were in being able to adopt us. Mom and dad continued farming for another 28 years. In 1979 she wanted to work outside the home and took her course to become a Care Aide. She worked at the Palliser Care Centre from 1979-1988. She loved taking care of the residents and enjoyed her short time there.  Due to a back injury she had to quit.

After dad passed away mom missed him so much, and after mourning her loss, she picked herself up and pushed forward. She became a very strong and independent woman and even did a mission trip to Barbados with East Side Missions Team, at the age of 78. She never held back from doing new things. Mom loved to cook, entertain people, garden, go camping, travelling, and of course spending time with her grandchildren and great-grandchildren. Family was always so special to her right until the end. She enjoyed the visits by family and friends whenever they would pop by and especially when she became a resident in LTC. Mom and I became very close at this time in our relationship as mother and daughter. She always called me “her precious daughter”. Everyone in The Meadows knew Lucille’s daughter, Ellie. I was so honored to have the opportunity to sit by mom’s side as she passed from this world to the end of her journey here on earth on Wednesday, August 6, 2025. With tears I was able to say my goodbyes and know that she is now home with our Heavenly Father, no more pain, no more heartache. Until we meet again mom. I will love you always and forever.

Mom leaves to cherish her memory to her daughter, Ellie & Lance Dyck; her grandchildren and great-grandchildren, Darren Dyck {Kyley and Corbin}, Melissa & Derrick Jesney {Connor and Gracelyn}, Andy Johnston & partner, Carin, Terry & Danni Johnston {Xavier}; and her sisters-in-law, Joy Beach-Hinther and Grace Herbel. She was predeceased by her husband, Eldon Herbel {2007}; her daughter, Orabeth Johnston {2022}; her parents, Henry & Elizabeth Hinther, her brothers, Henry {Lorraine} Hinther; Gordon {Frieda} Hinther, Dick Hinther; her sister, Violet {Elmer} Paulsen; her parents-in-law, David & Molly Herbel; a brother-in-law, Harold Herbel; and by her sisters-in-law, Violet {Victor} Beisel and Mildred {Ken} Rudi.                   

The family would like to thank the staff at House #7 for the

great care of their mom, Lucille.

They would also like to thank Frieda for her friendship and

the bond they shared with one another.
