Lyle Downey, age 69, went peacefully into the arms of Jesus on Sunday, July 27, 2025 at The Meadows – Clover House in Swift Current, SK. He will be greatly missed but we do not “mourn as those without hope”. Lyle Downey was born on July 1, 1956 in Gull Lake, SK to Zene & Anne Downey. He grew up on the family farm south of Gull Lake, attended school in Gull Lake, and later completed his GED at Cypress Hills Regional College. Over the years Lyle’s employment included working as a parts salesman at various dealerships and driving concrete truck for Westland Concrete. In 1993, Lyle completed his Class 1A driver course. He worked as a long-haul trucker driving Super B’s for Bickner Trucking in Vanguard. In 2003, he started driving fuel truck, first for UFA Swift Current, and then later for B & A Petroleum. Lyle married his ‘princess’, Edith Dyck, on December 23, 2000 at Trailview Alliance Church, in Swift Current. They enjoyed and shared many experiences together attending various southern gospel concerts, camping at Cypress Hills and with the grandkids at Okotoks. Several winters were spent in California with one of the highlights for Lyle was to attend a Maple Leaf game in Anaheim, and to meet Dr. David Jeremiah in person at Shadow Mountain Community Church. Other highlights included trips to Hawaii, Pigeon Forge Tennessee, and a once in a lifetime trip to Israel! Besides travelling, Lyle enjoyed hunting and fishing, attending Roughrider games, smoking meat on the BBQ, and more recently his latest passion golfing. Lyle attended Trailview Alliance Church for many years enjoying his volunteer role as an usher. More recently, cheerfully and faithfully served in the kitchen ministry, and as a greeter at Restoration House. Lyle loved life and greeted people with a cheerful smile and hearty laugh. He will be remembered for his big ‘Downey’ smile! He had a determined personality and lived life to the fullest and would not let life get him down. No matter the circumstances in his life’s journey, his faith and trust in God was never shaken. He loved the Lord and could not wait to meet his Savior. Lyle is survived by his wife, Edith; his son, Brett (Amber) Downey, his grandchildren, Rowan, Gracen, Ella and Declan; his son, Jarrett Downey; his father, Zene Downey; his brothers, Lorne Downey, Dan (Norine) Downey; his nephew, Kyle (Alicia) Downey; his nieces, Laura (Brandon) Schultz and Emily (Cole) Shatosky; as well as several Aunts, Uncles, and Cousins. He was predeceased by his daughter, Kelli Leigh Rempel (Jamie) in 2009; and by his mother, Anne Downey, in 2006.
The Funeral Service was held on Wednesday, August 6, 2025 at 2:00 pm from the Trailview Alliance Church, Swift Current, SK with Pastor Rob Cochrane officiating. “All Praise (Sing Praise)”, “How Good is He”, and “Hymn of Heaven” were sung by the congregation under the direction of the Restoration House Worship Band. The eulogy was read by Dan Downey. Special music was brought by Don Doerksen singing, “God’s Great” and “I Call It Home”.
