Mary Thiessen Obituary

Mary Thiessen’s earthly journey came to a close on Sunday, May 21, 2023 at the age of 93 when her sons, Lloyd and Bruce, had the privilege of escorting her into the arms of Jesus.

Mary Hilda Thiessen was born on May 12, 1930 to Jacob & Maria Brown in Swift Current, SK.

After a brief stint as a nurse’s aide, she married Jake Thiessen June 24, 1950 and began her lifelong career as a farm wife. Though petite of stature, she was tenacious and tough as nails when there was work to be done!

Mary loved serving others. As an active member of the Zion Mennonite Church Women in Mission group, she contributed to the church and the community with baking, preserves, music, skits, and homemade wool quilts. She enjoyed her 35 years volunteering at the MCC Thrift Store and was a “Reduce, Reuse, Recycle” advocate before it became fashionable. The opportunity to reclaim and repurpose clothing and household goods was dear to her heart.

As the Thiessen Farm responsibilities transitioned to Lloyd & Linda, Mary & Jake began to travel. They discovered a pleasant Arizona winter climate and found a warm community with good friendships among other like-minded Snowbirds in a Yuma RV Park.

Mary is survived by her husband of 72 years, Jake; her sons, Bruce (Donna) and Lloyd (Linda); her grandchildren, Jeremy (Erin), David (Maureen), Stephen (Melissa), Julia (Jon) Diment, Carla (Aaron), Phoenix, and Derek (Jill); her great-grandchildren, Liam, Karis, Brady, Silas, Avery, Arlo, Willem, Barrett, Kesler, Benji, Hazel, Harrison, Elliot, and Elise; her nieces, Pat (Greg) Brososky, Elnora Colley, Bonnie Jahnke, and Shelley Jahnke; and by her grandniece, Maddy Quinn.

The Funeral Service for Mary Thiessen was held on Friday, July 28, 2023 at 2:00 pm from Zion Mennonite Church, Swift Current, SK with Rev. Herman J. Wiebe officiating. Bruce & Donna Thiessen, David Thiessen, and Jeremy Thiessen served as musicians. The eulogy was given by the Thiessen family. The ushers in the church were Peter Dyck and Matt Derksen.

The service will be recorded and available upon request from the family. The service card is available to view below.

The Private Interment Service was held prior to the Funeral Service from Hillcrest Cemetery, Swift Current, SK with Mary’s family serving as Pallbearers.
