Melvin Christensen Obituary

The family of Melvin Christensen, age 94, of Swift Current, and formerly from Kyle, are deeply saddened to announce his passing on Friday, December 20, 2024 at Cypress House in Swift Current.

Melvin Olaf Christensen was born on June 10, 1930, at the Tuberose Hospital, Tuberose, SK, the first child born to Kaare & Melba Christensen. Melvin attended Kyle School through Grade 12, where in Grade 10 he met the love of his life, Evelyn McCrie. He worked weekends at Driscoll's General Store while going to school. After completing school, he worked at the Co-op for a short time, and then for his Uncle Jim on his farm. Melvin and Evelyn McCrie were married on July 26, 1951. They lived at Uncle Jim's until the fall, then briefly moved to Kyle, and then in the early spring of 1952 to their own farm. They continued farming actively until 2016. In 1998 they moved to their new house in Kyle where they spent endless hours in their garden and maintaining their beautiful yard.

Melvin & Evelyn worked together on their mixed farm side by side, hand in hand, inseparable and they had a beautiful life together. Melvin was a scout leader for many years which he enjoyed immensely, and he knew all his knots and would get very upset if you didn’t tie a knot properly. Melvin & Evelyn enjoyed spending time with their neighbors, curling, skiing, fishing, bus trips, cruising, and travelling with family and friends. They visited many countries, much of the United States, Eastern and Western Canada, as well as spending a few winters in B.C. They spent many summers camping with their grandchildren at Cypress Hills and at the Saskatchewan Landing, taking all the grandkids at once.

Melvin is survived by his loving wife, Evelyn, of 74 years; a daughter-in-law, Heather Christensen – children, Lindsay (Ryan) and Kaare (Jodi); his sons, Brian Christensen – his children, Amanda (Christopher) and Stephen (Morgan): Bevan (Michele) Christensen – their children, Leyan (Craig) and Jennifer (Mark): Jim (Cindy) Christensen – children, Tanya (Josh) and Jesse (Lindsay); his 11 great-grandchildren; and by his sister, Corinne Peters. He was predeceased by his son, Wayne Christensen; a granddaughter, Pamela; a daughter-in-law, Helen Christensen; his parents, Kaare & Melba Christensen; and by a brother-in-law, Abe Peters.

The Funeral Service was held on Saturday, January 4, 2025 at 2:00 pm from the Kyle United Church, Kyle, SK with Rev. Debora Springer officiating. The organists for the service were Ruth Smith and Val Reid. The Interment will take place at a later date at the Clearwater Cemetery, Kyle, SK.
