Nancy Currie June 13, 1969 - February 13, 2025
Nancy Leah Currie (nee Lazorko) of Swift Current, passed away on February 13, 2025 at Clover House in Swift Current due to a brain tumour.
Nancy was born in Swift Current on June 13, 1969. She spent her first few months in the city before moving with her family to Kelowna where she spent her childhood and early teenage years. During this time, Nancy was a typical child of the 70’s and 80’s; riding her bike, hanging out with her many friends and getting into just the right amount of trouble.
In 1984, Nancy moved with her mom and sister to Victoria where she made many new friends. She spent her teenage years in true Nancy style, rocking an asymmetrical 80’s hairdo, listening to Duran Duran and wearing just the right amount of acid wash. Nancy did well in school but always made time for the important things in life; playing soccer and field hockey, making her friends laugh and skipping class to stand in line for concert tickets. After graduating from Mount Douglas Secondary School in 1987, Nancy worked at many different jobs. In the early 2000’s Nancy teamed her entrepreneurial spirit with her love of horticulture and started her own landscaping business.
In 2004 while attending a social event in Vancouver, Nancy met the love of her life, Greg Currie. Their connection was instant. They quickly discovered that not only were they born in the same Swift Current hospital, but one of Greg’s cousins happened to be one of Nancy’s best friends. It was clear to all who saw them together, that these two were made for each other and it was always meant to be. Nancy soon moved to Vancouver where Greg was living at the time. They were married in 2008, then in 2009 they moved back to Swift Current to continue their love story and build a beautiful life together full of friends, family, music, art, laughter (SO much laughter) and great big love.
Nancy was never afraid to ask the question, “What else is possible?” Forever the entrepreneur, she embarked on a new adventure with her business Freestyle Art and Supplies. Nancy’s dreamchild combined many of her talents and passions. It was a space for anyone to come and transform scraps, leftovers and rejected bits and pieces into works of art. This was the essence of Nancy, finding beauty in the ordinary, creating art and bringing people together.
In 2013, Nancy followed her heart and began her journey into reiki, reflexology and massage therapy. Again, asking herself, “What else is possible?”, Nancy found the answer in her successful home-based business where she used her natural abilities in healing and positive energy, along with her exceptionally strong hands to bring health and healing to her clients, many of whom have come to know Nancy as a very close friend.
Aside from work, Nancy had many hobbies and interests. Each of her strong, caring, healing hands sported a very green thumb. Nancy’s garden was a work of art and her knack for flower arranging helped her to bring joy to others. She loved music, art and performing. Nancy also had a strong social conscience. She was never afraid to stand up for others, adding her voice to various causes.
Nancy always had a special bond with kids. She knew how to take them seriously while injecting just the right amount of silly into every interaction. Her nieces and nephews feel incredibly fortunate to have had Nancy in their lives, cheering them on, creating goofy home movies, playing games and making them laugh so, so hard. Nancy will be remembered for her kindness and her ability to make everyone in her life feel seen, heard and loved.
An entire essay could be written on the subject of Nancy’s hugs. They were legendary. They could change your mood, your mind, your life. Nancy was lightness and brightness and a bucket of love. We are all better people for having known this beautiful, sparkly soul.
Nancy is predeceased by her father, Edward Lazorko, her mother-in-law, Bonnie Currie and Bella (beloved pet dog). She is survived by her husband, Greg ♥ , Mother, Darleen Harrison, father-in-law, Norris Currie, Sister, Tammy (Steve) MacKenzie, brother-in-law, Dan (Trish Unger) Currie, Sister-in-law, Beth (Scott Washington) Currie, Nieces and Nephews, Clara (Jess) MacKenzie, Abby MacKenzie, Jed Currie, Graeme Currie, Callum Currie, Ian Washington, Elsa Washington, half siblings, Jamie Lazorko and Jennifer Davies and their families, pet cats Goat and Star, aunts, uncles, cousins and many, many friends.
