Nettie Zacharias Obituary

The family of Nettie Zacharias, age 93, of Swift Current, and formally of Herbert, would like to announce that she fell asleep in her Saviors arms in the early morning of Tuesday, November 15, 2024 at The Meadows in Swift Current.

Nettie M. Zacharias was born on June 1, 1931 to Cornelius J. & Maria K. Martens at Glen Kerr, at Jack & Agatha Dyck’s farm (her mom’s sister). Nettie loved school, and would often talk about school days, where a mischievous boy behind her would stick her braided hair in an ink jar, and how she loved learning different subjects. Nettie would be promoted into grade 6, but sadly had to leave school to start her journey of work outside the home to help support her family. Nettie was the only girl in a house with 4 boys, and she recounted many stories about them. Nettie was only 17 when her dad passed away. She was a daddy’s girl and loved him dearly. She missed him so very much, as well as her 2 deceased sisters. When Nettie was 19, she was baptized, and her faith became a steadfast foundation through the good and the hard years ahead. On November 16, 1952 Nettie married the love of her life, a dashing handsome Elmer Zacharias, at the Herbert Conference Church. Through the 68+ years of marriage she wore many hats. Some of them include janitorial work, scrubbing walls, cleaning, washing, babysitting, painting inside or outside, and helping her brother, Henry, with home renos before it was cool for women to do this…she could have been on HGTV! Along with all those jobs, Nettie also raised their family of three, milked cows, and sold the milk and butter.

Nettie enjoyed her early morning devotions, sitting in her chair and reading the Daily Bread. She read her Bible through numerous times, using the reading your Bible through in a year guideline. Her love for reading continued until a couple of years ago when her eyesight was failing. Nettie’s talent for sewing was visible in the many clothes, blankets, pillows, etc. that she made for her family. Some other favorite hobbies included crocheting, baking, and trying new recipes. Nettie was known for her famous buns. She was a true hostess, and you never left her house hungry. Playing games also entered as the children and grandchildren came along. Watching hockey or cheering for the Blue Jays was a great pastime in her later years when she had to slow down more. Nothing gave Nettie greater pleasure than making or baking something special for each person. If you said you liked something you were sure to be gifted with that item sooner than later. The greatest gift to you was her unconditional love! We all have fond memories of family gatherings when Nettie was with some or all of her 8 grandchildren and 19 great- grandchildren. Nettie’s legacy will shine on!

Nettie leaves to mourn her son, Perry (Pam Smith) Zacharias – Edam, SK, and Pam’s two sons; her daughter-in-law, Brenda Zacharias – Shaunavon, SK; her daughter, Eunice (Larry) Peterson – Swift Current, SK; her grandchildren, Tyron Zacharias, Tyrell Zacharias, Tyla Zacharias, Jason (Brianna) Zacharias, Justin (Delaney Bredahl) Zacharias, Jenna (Jeff) Hiebert, Nolan (Daina) Klassen, Logan (Kelli) Klassen, Rachelle Peterson (Larrys daughter); her 19 great-grandchildren; sisters-in-law, Ruth (Albert) Robillard and Martha Radiuk; and many precious nieces and nephews. She was predeceased by her husband, Elmer Zacharias – March 9, 2021; her son, Darrell Zacharias –  March 6, 2010; her parents, Cornelius & Maria Martens (VonNiessen); her siblings, Elizabeth Martens, Annie (Carl) Schultz, Jake (Elfriede) Martens, John (Violet) Martens, Henry (Marie) Martens, Peter (Kay) Martens; her parents-in-law, John R. & Anna Zacharias; and her in-laws, Irvin (Mary) Zacharias, John (Maria) (Justine) Zacharias, Linda (Ed) Funk, Leona (Roy) Funk, Anne (Dave) Doerksen, Eldon Zacharias, Esther (Pete) Klaasen, and Harry (Martha) Zacharias.
