It is with great sorrow that the family announces the passing of Norman Girodat, age 60, on Sunday, January 18, 2026 at the Cypress Regional Hospital, Swift Current, SK, surrounded by his family, following a courageous two-year battle with cancer.
Norman “Norm” Thomas Girodat was born on August 21st, 1965 in Shaunavon, SK to Gordon & Marilyn (née Sand) Girodat. He was raised on the family farm up on the bench, between Gull Lake and Shaunavon, where he developed a lifelong love of hard work and helping others. Norm and his four siblings grew up in a tiny farmhouse, where he shared a room with his younger brother, Dale, and lived in the same farmyard as Uncle Ken & Auntie Joan, making cousins feel more like siblings as they rode bikes and played together outdoors.
Because of his asthma, Norm was often discouraged from playing sports. This led him to become close friends with Howard Wong, with whom he would run up and down the field doing stats for Gull Lake Lions Football. Later in school, his teachers encouraged his parents to allow him to play basketball, a sport he excelled in and took great pride as a member of the Gull Lake Lions.
After graduating high school in 1983, Norm worked as a hired man for Jack Goohsen before beginning his electrical apprenticeship in 1985 through trade school in Moose Jaw. In 1989, he obtained his journeyman electrician certificate and went to work for various electrical companies across Gull Lake, Shaunavon, Swift Current, Medicine Hat, and Kindersley.
On October 24, 1997 after much encouragement from his wife, Cindy, Norm founded Girodat Electric, a business he proudly operated for 28 years serving the Gull Lake area. One of his proudest accomplishments was serving on the board responsible for the construction of the Gull Lake Community Hall, to which he generously donated both his time and materials. Norm employed many young people in the community throughout the years, and provided all four of his children with their first jobs. His daughter, Taylor, worked alongside him for twelve years, until he retired just weeks before his passing.
Norm was deeply involved in his community and served on numerous boards, including the Skating Rink, Gull Lake Meadowdale Golf Club, Gull Lake Oilmens, Tompkins Legion, and Tompkins Rolling Acres Golf Club.
Norm’s love for sports was known by everyone who knew him. He became a lifelong Montreal fan that began in Grade 3 when he decided that the Alouettes “had the hottest cheerleaders.” The Montreal Canadiens, Montreal Expos, and the Montreal Alouettes were a common conversation starter with Norm, especially while his wife Cindy, the diehard Winnipeg Blue Bomber fan, was in the room. Throughout his life, Norm enjoyed broomball, fastball, hockey, curling, and especially golf. In 2023, he opened The Bunker Golf Simulation, which quickly became a popular gathering place for local golfers.
Norm is survived by his wife, Cindy (née Line), with whom he shared 33 years of marriage; his children, Ashley Krogstad (JR), Cole Girodat (Hannah), Taylor Girodat (Luke), and Treigh Girodat; his grandchildren, Summer Zacharias, Grayson, Charlotte, and Fynnleigh Krogstad; his mother, Marilyn Girodat; his siblings, Denise Willows (Kevin), Dale Girodat (Roxane), Michelle McNaught, and Cheryl Friday (Joe); his nieces and nephews, Anthony Winquist (Megan), and Aaron Winquist (Sofia), Riley, Josh, and Emma Girodat, Chandler McNaught, James, Dawson, and Lane Friday, Nick, Nathan, and Kaeden Line; his great-nieces, Kehlani, and Kensli Winquist, and Ava Line; and by his in-laws, Ardie & Bryan Line.
He was predeceased by his father, Gordon; his grandparents, Aaron & Marie Girodat and Mike & Rosa Sand; his brothers-in-law, Mark Winquist, Mike Line, Morgan McNaught; his niece, Sidney Willows; and his great-nephew, Kyrie Winquist.
The Memorial Service for Norm Girodat will be held on Tuesday, January 27, 2026 at 2:00pm from the Gull Lake Community Hall, Gull Lake, SK with Curtis Benson officiating.
