Peter J. Friesen, age 99, passed from this world to the arms of his Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ, on Tuesday, March 31, 2026.
Peter was born on January 16, 1927, in the village of Schoenfeld, SK, to Jacob & Maria Friesen, the seventh of eleven children. He grew up there and attended school through grade 8. Pater enjoyed spending time with friends, and his eyes twinkled when he admitted to hitching rides with them on train cars.
Peter’s father owned a general store in Schoenfeld where Peter worked and learned about business – lessons that served him well in his own business later.
When he was 20, a beautiful young lady from Blumenhof, Sarah Ens, caught his eye. They dated for three years and were married on June 5, 1949, a love story that lasted 70 years.
As a young adult, Peter realized his need for salvation and yielded his life to Jesus Christ. His faith grew throughout the rest of his life, impacting his family and all who knew him.
Peter and Sarah worked their mixed farm in the Bigford district for 21 years while raising six children. They moved to Swift Current in 1968 so their children could attend school without riding the bus several hours a day. They farmed from the city for another three years before Peter opened Friesen’s Fine Furniture in the fall of 1971. Peter’s brother, Isaac, joined him several years later, and they operated the store together until Peter retired in February 1984.
Peter and Sarah joined the Gideons in 1984. They were passionate about providing Bibles to people who had never owned one. They also enjoyed traveling all over Canada, the continental United States, and abroad to Hawaii, Israel and Egypt.
Peter is survived by his children, Dorothy (Arnold) Andres, Bob (Louise) Friesen, Ron (Kathy) Friesen, Wes (Pat) Friesen, Deb (Dick) Klassen, and Harold (Theressa) Friesen; fifteen grandchildren; thirty-four great-grandchildren; and three great-great-grandchildren.
He was pre-deceased by his beloved wife, Sarah; his parents; and all ten siblings.
The family of Peter J. Friesen extend their heartfelt thanks to the doctors and staff of Cypress Regional Hospital.
