Peter "Pete" Young Obituary

It is with sadness that the family announces the passing of Peter Young, age 78, on Friday, December 20, 2024, at the General Hospital in Regina, SK.

Peter Edward Young was born on August 7, 1946 in Regina, SK to Adam & Bertha Jean Young. When Pete was 17, he met Shirley Morrell, and they were married on March 29, 1968. Pete & Shirley were blessed with two daughters, Karla and Michelle, and in 1976 they completed their family when their son, Brad, was born.

Pete worked at the POOL Livestock in Regina and accepted a location transfer to Swift Current in 1975. During the week Pete worked at POOL Livestock and on the weekends, he would travel to Regina to shingle houses. In 1979, Pete trained to become an inspector with the Federal Government which started his 33-year career. He was always known as the guy who always had a joke to tell or a candy to offer you.

When Pete & Shirley first moved to Swift Current, he played ball with the Ed Look Ball Team and was known for his cross-handed home runs. When his daughters were old enough, Pete coached their softball teams and taught his players that the most important rule in the game was good sportsmanship. In the winter, Pete curled and helped to organize smear tournaments. He also enjoyed a game of crib, but mostly, he enjoyed his wife’s cooking and baking.

Pete served 10 years on the Swift Current Ag & Ex Fair Board as the Gates & Security Director, which included 2 terms as President. He had a devoted crew who came back year after year to volunteer their time for him. Pete loved to tell the story about getting on the radio and calling his security crew to the Merry-Go-Round to handle a security issue. As he impatiently waited for his crew to come to the Super Loop, all his security was in kiddie-land surrounding the Merry-Go-Round. After that, Pete was committed to learning the names of all the rides. Pete also had his children involved as volunteers for him at Frontier Days, tasking Brad to work security, Karla to work gates, and Michelle to organize his loyal volunteers. Shirley took on all the grandchildren and made sure they made it back and forth to the fair so everyone could be involved in his commitment and dedication during his decade on the Fair Board.

Pete is survived by his wife of 57 years, Shirley Young; his children, Karla (Curtis) Young, Michelle (Calvin) McCrie, and Brad (Janine) Young; his grandson, Andrew Young; his granddaughters, Ash-Lee Hommy, Blaiz Drummond, and Sidney Young; his great-granddaughters, Haidyn Homme and Katrina Dueck; his sister, Merlyn (Jack) Young; his niece, Rachel Werrett (Brin and Ruby); as well as by many good friends who shared in Pete’s life. He was predeceased by his parents, Adam & Bertha Jean Young; his granddaughter, Alysa Young; and by his brother, Don (Pee Wee) Young.
