Roland “Red” Gauthier

May 6, 1938 – May 15, 2026 passed away peacefully at the age of 88.

Red was one of 16 children and learned early the importance of hard work, family, and having a good sense of humour. He spent most of his life in Val Marie, a community he loved deeply and where he built a life full of stories, friendships, and laughter.

Red worked for the PFRA in Val Marie for 24 years and was also a rancher who never shied away from hard work. Over the years, he operated Alex’s Cabins and later helped his daughter Aline run the Cool Stop then the Val Marie Hotel. In retirement, he made his home in Swift Current at Prairie View Lodge. He made lots of good friends there.

He then moved to Willow Creek Manor for his final days.

He was predeceased by his beloved wife Rose, son-in-law Arvid Korsberg, and numerous brothers, sisters and in-laws

Sister in law Agnes Watson, brother in law Tony Schmidt, sister and brother in law Alice and Robert McConnell 

As well as numerous grand children and great grand children. All of whom brought him endless pride and joy. He loved to see the little ones as often as he could.

Anyone who knew Red will remember his quick wit, his love of visiting, and his ability to make people laugh. He loved a good joke and a good story. Red had a way of making people feel welcome, and there was rarely a conversation that didn’t end with a laugh.

He will be deeply missed by his family, friends, and all who had the pleasure of knowing him. His stories, laughter, and mischievous smile will live on in the many memories shared around kitchen tables for years to come. There will be no service as per request. Dad will be laid to rest at the Val Marie Cemetery with his immediate family by his side
