Ronald Byers Obituary

Ronald Wallace Byers, 78, passed away on June 14, 2024, at Cypress Regional Hospital in Swift Current, SK following a short illness.

Born April 16, 1946, in Penticton, BC, to Samuel and Beryl Byers, Ron grew up and spent most of his adult life in Swift Current. He graduated from W.A. Beatty Collegiate in 1964. Declining a full scholarship to study engineering at McGill University, Ron chose to remain close to home and family. He earned a diploma in electrical engineering from the Saskatchewan Technical Institute in Moose Jaw in 1966 and a degree in economics from the Regina Campus of the University of Saskatchewan (now the University of Regina) in 1972.

Ron’s distinguished career in public service spanned more than four decades, including positions with Alberta’s Energy Resources Conservation Board and the Ministries of Municipal Affairs and Labour Relations & Workplace Safety in Saskatchewan. He recovered millions of dollars in unpaid wages for workers across southwest Saskatchewan during his long tenure as the region’s sole Employment Standards Officer, yet he remained well-respected among the business community for his fair dealing and even-handed application of the law.

Ron is survived by his wife of 47 years, Heather and by his son, Scott. His family extends their heartfelt thanks for the exemplary care he received through his final months at the Allan Blair Cancer Centre and Patient Lodge in Regina, the Royal University Hospital in Saskatoon, and—especially—the Cypress Regional Hospital in Swift Current.

Consistent with Ron’s wishes, there will be no formal memorial service. Instead, recognizing his lifelong love of books and his belief in the importance of public libraries to a healthy democracy, Ron’s family invites those who knew him to commemorate his life with a donation to the Chinook Regional Library.
