Rozada Castle, age 87, passed away peacefully on Sunday, October 20, 2024 at The Meadows in Swift Current with family by her side. Rozada Catherine Castle was born on November 12, 1936, in Dinsmore, SK to Robert & Hattie Ptolemy, the only sister to her seven brothers, Lloyd, Arnold, Earl, Clare, Dale, Gerald, and Lawrence. She grew up on the farm and went to school in Dinsmore. Rozada was also very active in sports, especially softball. During her school years she was a Girl Guide, and in 1954 was chosen to represent Saskatchewan as one of ten Girl Guides of Canada at a Guide camp in Sweden. Enroute, they toured England, Denmark, Germany and Holland, travelling by ship for six weeks and camping in Sweden for two weeks. One of Rozada’s highlights of the trip was having tea with Queen Elizabeth. Upon completing her schooling, she attended teachers’ college in Saskatoon. Rozada’s first teaching job was at Silver Craig School in the Duncairn district, and later she taught at Wilhelmina. Coming to these districts to teach was where she met Dale Castle. They were married on October 21, 1957, and had 55 years together, until Dale’s passing in 2013. They were blessed with four children, Brenda 1958, Arlene 1960, Erroll 1964, and Brent 1966. Rozada & Dale started a farmyard together ½ mile down the road from where Dale grew up. Rozada was a true farmer's wife and farmed right alongside Dale. Rozada had lost both her parents by the time she was 24, so she learned a lot from her mother at a very young age. Rozada was always baking, cooking, canning, and helping any way she could on the farm. As kids were growing up, every morning before school she would ask each one what they wanted for breakfast and lunch, then proceed to make each their own individual breakfast and lunch. After school, we knew she would be home for us with snacks. She was always ready to go on a school field trip with her kids. You never went away from their home hungry, there was always baking and sandwiches ready for anyone who came to the farm. Rozada loved her yard, flowers, and garden, winning many awards for her yard. She belonged to the Swift Current Horticultural Society and entered the horticultural show with her vegetables and flowers, taking home many plaques and awards from these events. Rozada belonged to the Duncairn Community Ladies Club, and they did many functions for the community. All through her life she was always up for a good game of ball and could always throw and hit a ball better than any of us. She also curled, mostly skipping for the team, and after moving to town she took up bowling. For many years, Rozada & Dale square danced and enjoyed many country dances. They took trips to Hawaii, California, Alaska, many states in the US, and Canadian provinces. Rozada loved her overseas trips with Brent and Arlene, travelling to England, Ireland, Whales, Greece, Italy, and Germany. Rozada & Dale enjoyed the community with their friends and neighbors whether it was playing cards or just visiting. They enjoyed camping, holidaying, and watching sports activities with their kids and grandkids. The family would go on a summer holiday every year, right after the haying was done. They also rarely missed Sunday School and church. Rozada started a catering company with her daughters, Brenda and Arlene, catering to weddings, anniversaries, Christmas parties, and various large functions. In 1998, Rozada & Dale built a home in Swift Current. The first few years they spent the winters there before moving to town permanently and driving to the farm during farming season. A few years after Dale’s passing, Rozada and their very good friend, George Wall started to keep each other company. This put a smile back on Rozada’s face. George was such a pleasure and there was never a dull moment with him around. We are very grateful to George. Rozada was diagnosed with vascular dementia and was not able to live in her home. She spent time at Cypress House and then Riverview Estates, living in her own apartment. Her health deteriorated and she eventually moved into The Meadows.
“Although mom's disease took away from creating new memories over the past few years of her life, she always had a big smile when any of us came to visit. Mom was dearly loved and will be deeply missed.”
