Sueloge Gin Obituary

Sueloge "Slug" Wong Gin

Herbert, Saskatchewan – Sueloge "Slug" Wong Gin, 95, of Herbert, Saskatchewan, passed away on May 29, 2025, at the Regina General Hospital after a three-week illness and several months of declining health.  Slug was a cherished member of the Herbert community, known for his unwavering spirit, dedication to service, and deep love for his family.

Born on January 7, 1930, in Herbert, Slug was the second child and eldest son of seven children born to Chinese immigrants, Wong and May Gin.  He completed his high school education at Herbert School in 1948 and then studied aviation for a year.  During high school, he was a member of Air Cadets.

Upon reaching legal age, Slug took over as the manager of the Rush Lake Western Hotel and Bar, which his father had built.  The hotel was later traded for farmland north of Rush Lake, where Slug continued to farm into his elder years.  In Herbert, he worked as a carpenter with Nelson Homes and was involved in the construction of the Herbert Sports Complex, later becoming the curling rink and kitchen caretaker until his retirement.  He was recognized for his dedicated community service with a SUMA Meritorious Service Award in 2007.

Slug was a well-respected and admired volunteer, dedicating his time to various community initiatives, including being a member of the Masons and an Honorary Lifetime member of the Lions Club.  He assisted in the construction of the Lions Hall and served with the fire department.  He was fondly remembered for cooking community barbecues.

As a young man, he traveled across Canada exploring the country with friends.  Slug played golf, baseball, curling, tennis, skeet, and hockey, notably as a goalie for the Rush Lake hockey team.  He also played in his high school band and enjoyed Big Band music, coin collecting, and dancing.  Fishing trips with family in the Northwest Territories were among his most treasured memories.  Slug also embraced a life of sobriety, having renounced alcohol decades ago, which he viewed as a significant achievement.

Slug was a devoted husband who married Elaine (Masson) in November 1957 in Swift Current.  They raised a family of three sons and one daughter in Herbert.  He is survived by his children,  Gordon (Kathy) of Cochrane, AB, Rory of Regina, SK, Suelaine (Dale) of Victoria, BC, David (Jodie) of Herbert, SK; three grandsons Gary, Danny, and Garrett; two great-grandchildren; and by siblings, Joeline Shong and King Gin. He was predeceased by his wife, Elaine; his parents, Wong & May Gin; siblings, Dolly (Muir), Henry Gin, Ken Gin, adopted brother, Dan Thom; sister-in-law, Gail Gin; brother-in-law, Sammy Shong; nephew Louie; and by a grandson, Braden Gin.

The Funeral Service will be held at St. Paul Lutheran Church in Herbert on Wednesday at 2:00 p.m. Interment will follow at the Herbert Cemetery, where he will be laid to rest beside his wife and other family members.  Officiating the service will be Donovan Epp, with Diane Peters as the Pianist.  Ushers will be Rudy Pipke and Harvey Shultz.  Honorary Pallbearers include Tom Donnelly, Garrett Gin, Doug Francis, Dr. Clinton Wong, and Dr. John Esin.  Pallbearers are Dale Connick, Charles Donnelly, Gary Gin, Danny Gin, Mike Francis, and Dale Sanders.  The eulogy will be presented by Trudy Dumont.  Arrangements are entrusted to Swift Current Funeral Home.  A reception will follow at the Lions Hall.  Attendees are encouraged to share their stories and memories.
