Susie (Martens) Friesen, age 91, passed away peacefully surrounded by her family on Friday, October 25, 2019 at the Cypress Regional Hospital. Susie was born on September 26, 1928 in the Blumenort district to John & Helena Martens, and she also grew up in this area. Susie married the love of her life, John J. Friesen, on November 30, 1952.
Susie was an amazing cook and avid gardener. She was famous for her apple pies. She loved making sure that everyone got fed when they were at her house. She drove school bus for many years and when they moved to Swift Current, she took on a job as a Walmart greeter. Susie enjoyed spending time with her children and grandchildren and loved it when her great-grandchildren came to visit. She was very involved in her church and her strong faith was a testament to many. Susie’s smile would light up a room. She loved watching curling, with Jennifer Jones being her absolute favorite.
Susie is survived by her loving husband of almost 67 years, John J. Friesen; her children, Helen (Stan), Ed (Lois), and Stan (Tamara); grandchildren, Shannon (Travis), Jen (Cam), Justin, Alison (Mike), Marri, Dillon, and Austin; great-grandchildren, Taylor and Jayden; daughter-in-law, Edna; sister, Ann Martens; sisters-in-law, Marie Funk and Eva (Arnold) Lang; as well as many nieces and nephews.
She was predeceased by her grandson, Eugene Friesen; parents, John & Helena Martens; brothers, John Martens, Jake (Mary) Martens, and Corny (Elizabeth) Martens; and sisters, Helen (Jacob) Fehr, Mary (Frank) Thiessen, Elizabeth (Abe) Schmidt, and Katherine (Jake) Froese.
The Funeral Service for Susie Friesen was held on Friday, November 1, 2019 at 2:00 pm from Trailview Alliance Church, Swift Current, SK with Pastor Mike Smart officiating. “Where the Flowers Never Fade,” “In the Garden,” and “What a Friend We Have in Jesus” were sung by the congregation under the leadership of Karan Regier, with Marilyn Ginter serving as pianist. The tribute was shared by Austin Friesen on behalf of the family. The eulogy was given by John Kehler. The ushers in the church were John Fehr, Betsy Ryan, Dale Peters, and Jerry Funk.
The Private Interment Service was held prior to the Funeral Service from Hillcrest Cemetery, Swift Current, SK with Susie’s grandchildren, Shannon Zayonce, Jen McIntyre, Justin Aikens, Alison Thibodeau, Marri Friesen, Dillon Friesen, and Austin Friesen serving as Pallbearers.
