Thelma Riegel

Thelma Riegel, age 95, passed away peacefully on Friday, August 27, 2021 at the Meadows – House 1, Swift Current, SK. Thelma Irene Riegel was born in Melville, SK to Jacob & Maria (nee Kitzmann) Schnieder. At the age of thirteen, Thelma dedicated her life to Jesus Christ and was baptized.

On April 10, 1946 Thelma married William “Bill” Riegel and moved to Lipton, SK where they farmed together. She was a hard worker, doing many of the chores around the farm when Bill worked for a farm implement dealership. The moved into Lipton and eventually sold the small farm. Together, they took up a number of janitorial jobs in Lipton while Thelma worked at restaurants in Fort Qu’Appelle, SK.

In 1986, Bill took sick and in 1992 they moved to the Golden West Manor in Swift Current, SK. Thelma continued to take care of Bill, truly demonstrating what it is to love and be committed. In 2000, Bill moved to the Palliser Care Centre in Swift Current. Thelma came to see him faithfully every day to feed him until his passing on November 10, 2005. Thelma leaves friends at Golden West Manor — she enjoyed bingo at the Junction and went with a group of women that became known as the “Golden Girls.”

Thelma lived in Golden West Manor until 2020, when she was taken to Clover House, then to the Gull Lake Care Home, before returning to the Meadows in Swift Current.

Thelma’s children would like to extend their appreciation to the nurses and care givers at Clover House, the Gull Lake Care Home, and the Meadows – House 1 that took care of their mom during a very difficult Covid 19. Thank you!

Thelma is survived by her three children and their families — her daughter, Karen Newbury (Chilliwack, BC) and her children, Crystal Kraemer (Brian Schulz) and Tanya (Kevin) Pelzer (their children, Aaron (Sharla) Daniels (their children, Jaylynne, Evan, and Westyn), Devin Pelzer, and Natasha Pelzer);

her son, Delbert (Onalee) Riegel (Swift Current, SK) and their children, Ryan (Delynn) Riegel (their children, Ethan and Mia), Steven Riegel (his children, Hudson and Emersyn), and Jerrid (Lindsay) Riegel (their children, Jace and Ali);

and by her daughter, Ellen Riegel (Swift Current, SK).

A private family service for Thelma Riegel was held on Tuesday, August 31, 2021 at the Swift Current Funeral Home Chapel. The interment service will take place from Memory Gardens Cemetery, Swift Current.
