April 1, 2017

Elmer Doerksen, age 79, passed away peacefully on Saturday, April 1, 2017 at the Herbert & District Integrated Facility, Herbert, SK. Elmer Kenneth Doerksen was born March 27, 1938 in Herbert to Peter & Elizabeth Doerksen and grew up on a mixed farm in Arden, MB. He enjoyed taking care of the animals and helping his father with the farming activities. He spent the early part of his adult life in Winnipeg and near the age of 40, settled in Herbert until his passing. He faithfully patronized all of the local coffee shops and was known as the “Local Weatherman.” His daily activities included filling the bird feeders, going for long walks, stopping at the Co-op to buy more bird seed, and then have his regular coffee break. On his return home, he would pick up treats, sweets, and pop for everyone. His favorite show was “The Beverly Hillbillies.” He enjoyed many Group Home family outings and vacations. He developed a special bond with his Group Home family and will be sadly missed by all the staff and his Group Home family. Elmer was predeceased by his parents, Peter & Elizabeth Doerksen; his brother, Harvey Doerksen; and by his brother-in-law, Louis Gendron. Left to cherish his memory are his siblings, Linda (Cornie) Kornelson, Elaine Doerksen-Gendron, and Bob (Dorothy) Doerksen; his numerous nieces and nephews; his great nieces and nephews; his aunt, Lillian, and uncle, Richard; and by his cousins. The family would like to extend their appreciation to Dr. Kassette and the staff at the Herbert Hospital for their kindness and compassionate care. A special thank you to all the thoughtful and supportive staff at the Herbert Group Home for their exceptional care and their dedicated time spent with Elmer in his final hours.
