Doug Colter

Doug Colter passed away on Monday, May 15, 2017 at the age of 89 at the Gull Lake Special Care Centre, Gull Lake, SK.

As per Doug’s instructions, there will be no Funeral Service.

In memory of Doug Colter, donations made to the Gull Lake Special Care Centre and the Gull Lake Ambulance Service would be appreciated by the family.

Written from the grandkids:

Grandpa, you were lucky enough to be brought into this world on December 14th, 1927 without knowing that one day you would have the opportunity to meet all of us. From your early days on the farm, you grew to become the grandpa we knew and loved. You played sports your whole life, and when you couldn’t play, you started coaching. And you know what they say, those that can’t play become coaches. Some of our most treasured memories are going with you to baseball games in Hazlet or Gull Lake and just watching you love the game.

During your ball playing days, you met and fell in love with an umpire, Jean Johnston — which most players would never admit to, but you had no problem letting people know. You and grandma would have been as dynamic a duo on that ball field as you were in life with us. In 1951, you and grandma got married and completed your family with three daughters a few years down the road.

You helped shape us into the somewhat normal adults we have become. You taught us all to drive, even if that meant ending up in the ditch on multiple occasions. You taught us all to shoot and would love taking us out to shoot gophers, until one of us became a better shot than you, and then miraculously you stopped taking us. You would take us to random fields so we could look for rocks and various arrow heads, but now looking back maybe you were just getting us to clean up your friend’s fields. You helped us four “city kids” from Alberta become advocates for how great and beautiful Saskatchewan truly is. And although you failed on two of us, the other two have become true Roughrider fans.

You were always ready with a joke to tell or a story to share and they always had your classic humorous spin on all of them. We may not have known everyone you were talking about, but once you were done we felt like we grew up with them all. You were the patriarch of our family and we may not have said it enough but we all loved you and we will never forget you.

Doug will be loved and missed by his daughters, Sandy (Denis), Darla (Ron), and Dixie; his grandkids, Doug (Katherine), Mick (Crystal), Christie (Paul), and Kelsey; and by great-grandkids Kyle, Rachel, and Milo.
